Big Beaver Skin

I ride the amtrak now to work. It is nice and roomy and they have power outlets at the seats, which is helpful.

One thing I do not like is their large ticket. It is unweildy and as large as an airline boarding pass. The only problem is that I have to carry it around every day. To solve this problem I keep the pass in the back pocket of my moleskine large journal.

The other day, after I sat down on the train and as the conductor was nearing, i pulled out my moleskine to get out my ticket. The gentleman next to me asked, "Hey, is that one o' them big beaver skins? I love those things."

Joe Sacco Comic on Iraq Torture Case

I haven't read any of Joe Sacco's work until now, but this 8 page piece in the Guardian (pdf file) is excellent.

Comics are a weird beast. Not film, not literature. Journalism? In this case, definitely. In others, not so much. The incompleteness of the drawings, the pacing left to the viewer, the lack of voice, demands more of the reader. I have read dozens of stories like this, listened to broadcasts about the abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, but none have had nearly the same effect as this short, simple story.

I will definitely be picking up more of Sacco's work in the future...

A slight correction

A slight correction to tracey's post on our crap's collective weight. The weight of our belongings, excluding my main photo, video and computer gear, our persons, our cats and our cars was exactly 10,680 pounds.

Just a public service announcement to all our faithful readers. :)

Snakes and Rubies video/audio is out

The video and audio for the Snakes and Rubies is available for download.

There are video and audio versions in split or complete format. Please use the BitTorrent versions to help with the load.

I helped shoot the event, and Jacob Kaplan-Moss from the Django project shot footage and did the editing and Josh McAdams of Perlcast recorded the audio for the event.

I can't wait to watch this later today. Since i am sitting in a starbuck's dialed in on my treo, i will be watching this later today when i get to the office. :)
